Ben Moore 7-16-04 Cannon Beach Oregon with Haystack rock in the background. Remember the movie "The Goonies" ....Haystack rock is in it!! Dad loved getting his feet wet he was like a kid getting reconnected to the Pacific . He has such fond memories of it from his childhood so I know it did his heart good to be in it again. Am thankful we were able to go spend some time there with him.

Mom & Dad's first week!!
My Parents got in for a visit last Tuesday and had a good flight out. Mom says she's not any more tired than usual....we've tried to go easy for her, you can't tell by looking that she has cancer but does get tired rather easy.
We went to Oregon City to the End of the Trail interpretive Center on Thursday. Seems that "Barlow Road" which was what most of the wagon trains coming to Oregon took ended at Oregon City. It is a nice museum featuring a movie that uses actual journal entry's from 4 different people to chronicle the journey out and a Trolley ride around the city. Most of the original houses are still there with the furnishings but we didn't go thru any of them.
Dad is enjoying the fresh fruit and we don't pass up many fresh markets!!....or yard sales!! ha ha
Chuck took dad for an outing Saturday up to Falls Creek Falls, it was quite the hike for dad but he made it with flying colors. Chuck even came home with a muddy jeep, seems he and dad got adventurous and almost got stuck......I think dad was driving!! ha ha

Portland Blues Festival
Not being able to go to Cornerstone Festival for the 2nd year in a row was just downright depressing....So I dragged Chuck to a Blues festival and got cheered right up!! Chuck is such a good sport about this type thing, he kicked back in a lawn chair and I roamed around trying to get to the front of the stages!!
Got to hear one of my favorite guitarist for the second time this year, Jonny Lang, he is just amazing!! Another guy that surprised me was Anthony Gomes, he's from Canada and I just couldn't imagine good blues from a guy born that far north. He proved that heart and soul can be found anywhere. They are definitely keeping the spirit of Blues rock alive and well...THANK YOU!!!!

Back to Gifford Pinchot Nat'l Forest!!
Once again we found ourselves back in the Gifford Pinchot Nat'l forest, it was a great way to spend the 4th of July! Last week we had gone to hike back in to Falls Creek Falls and never made it...too many neat roads to distract us!! Yesterday we made it and I even got to see my second bear in the process, not a good view of it mind you but a bear non the less.
It was cold enough here yesterday morning that we pulled the top back up on the jeep and ran the heater....just had to throw that in for all of you sweltering in the south...our high only reached 76....anyway, I had read an article in the paper about this waterfall and how it was so far off the beaten track that it didn't get many visitors but was just as beautiful as the ones in Oregon along the interstate that have a steady stream of visitors. I said....hummmm, sounds like just the place for us to find!!
It took us a good 2 hrs along dusty back roads to get to the trailhead for the falls and then it was a 1.7 mile hike(VERTICAL)...just to get to the base of the falls...there is an optional 6 mile hike to get to the top of the falls....don't think we will ever do that one!! The effort was well worth it as the trail itself weaved thru an old growth forest of Douglas Firs and Western Cedars with Falls Creek beside us most of the way. The Falls itself was worth the hike as it crashed down from over 250 ft into a small pool of water and on into the creek. Seeing something like that in the wild with no guard rails or anything was a first for me...it was amazing to walk down to the pool and look up and feel the power so close. The spray sure felt good after that climb as well!!!
If you feel spry when you come to visit, we'll spend a day and take you off the beaten track....maybe you'll get to see more than a bears butt as it goes off the road down a hill!!

Gifford Pinchot Nat'l Forest
Saturday, June 26th, we decided to get an early start and head to the Gifford Pinchot Nat'l Forest and Mt Adams. Mt Adams is the 2nd largest Mt in Washington St...thanks to Mt St Helens blowing her top!! One of the entry's to the park is less than an hour from our house at Sunset Falls which is where we ended the day. We had been told that the park didn't get many visitors as everyone either went to St Helens, Rainier or Mt Hood and it seemed to be true. Most of the day we felt as if we had the place to ourselves which was nice but creepy winding thru Lookout Mt, a great gravel road over a 4000 ft pass. We realized if we dropped off the side, which was vertical in most spots, nobody would find us for yrs!!! Seeing how I was driving thru this stretch...it was on Chuck's mind!! ha ha
The GPS Chuck got for Christmas really came in handy on this trip, we were able to compare it with the Topo map and find some awesome roads...one spot we want to go back to looked like a major interstate for deer and elk, it was unbelievable how many tracks had churned up the area crossing the road. Neither one of us had seen anything like it before and that is where we saw the one deer of the day.
It was heading up Lookout Mt where I spotted my first bear in the wild.....it was so little I didn't even know what it was at first!! Seeing one has been a goal of mine for awhile now and needless to say I got a little excited!! The jeep scared it I'm sure but my yelling just pushed it right up the mountain. We got a good look at it as the slope it was running up was bare of everything but the bear!!
It was a GREAT day!!
We came out at a little town called Trout Lake and cut down to Hwy 14 and were going to come home along the Columbia river but the wind was blowing so hard it was miserable. The Columbia river was full of windsurfers...they had a great day for their sport, sun and high winds!! We cut back into the forest and took the "long" way home....isn't that always the best way???
